Scabby legs

A horse I look after at work has scabs behind her knees. I have been told that this is common in cob type horses with feathery legs. We have clipped her legs so that the area is easier to treat, and we have cleaned the scabs with hibiscrub and we have been applying sudocreme to help to soften the scabs but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Does anyone have any experiences with dealing with horses prone to getting scabby legs? What is the best way to go about treating them?

Any advice much appreciated.

I think it sounds like mites. My daughter's pony gets them and they're a pain to deal with particularly because he's so sensitive (ie allergic to tea tree oil, deet, etc) and also because he already has bad sweetitch and therefore is extraordinarily itchy, poor boy

The only way I can keep on top of them is keep his legs regularly clipped, ie every 3 or 4 weeks, and once a week I rub in coopers fly plus. Twice daily vigorous grooming also helps, and using medicated shampoo when washing.

I hope this helps.

If you want to send me a PM, I will send you a huge reply on looking after hairy horses and keeping them in perfect hairy glory without mites etc.

It does take a little bit of effort but I believe is well worth it to see the hair flying as they move.
