Daisy came to me with sweet itch (which I knew about) and had a Boett rug and mask. However, despite wearing her rug 24/7 she has a scabby flakey patch in her mane that is practically hairless.

I had never come across sweet itch until I got Daisy so am wondering if this is a symptom of her sweet itch, but if so how has she bitten while being rugged up to the eyeballs?

She is now caked in sudocreme to ease the sore bits.

So, sweet itch or not?

Sweet-itch lotion and itch free food supplement has stopped my horse itching now he just has the sweet-itch lotion on twice a day

It does sound like sweetitch - maybe a midge got underneath the rug and bit her lots?
Try naf d-itch ointment on it. My boy has a rug on for 6 weeks, decided he hated it and destroyed it twice, to the point that it is now not fixable. Have also tried benzyl but didn't make a blind bit of difference, but this new ointment is working REALLY well.

Wash every other day with head and shoulders, then apply a solution of 85% calamine, 10% benzyl benzoate and 5% meths. My vet told me about this when my old boy had sweet itch, he said it's the best treatment he's ever seen and as you make it yourself it's about 10% of the cost of ready made solutions.
Midges normally get under a rug when you change it or attack when you're riding. You can never get rid of sweet itch completely.
