Can anyone offer any advice please my youngster has an awful scabby tail. I have tried to put some soothing cream on it but the scabs are thick and I can't get them off.. Where they have started lifting his hair is coming out with it. Any ideas please x

My Dartmoor developed a very scabby tail at the top and all around, but it wasn't sweet itch as no where else affected and middle of winter.
Tried washing with hibiscub, dermoline, benzlebenzoate (sp) ect but the scaly skin was impossible to remove and clean due to the thickness and volume of hair, with small pea sized oozing raw sores underneath. When you pulled on the hairs it came out in your hand with a moist goey end on the hair follicle- after struggling for weeks new vet suggested shaving the top half of the dock as close as possible to the skin. This exposed it to the air as vet felt it was a moist warm environment encouraging the infection in the skin, and applying a strong antibiotic cream to the area was very effective.
Took a year to grow back fully but problem never came back. Was also advised never to apply tail bandage for longer than necessary.

Wash the tail well with Nizoral as he sounds like he may have some rain Scald in his tail hair.

Best done with hand hot water as it gets the shampoo well down into the roots.

Nizoral can be bought at the chemist.

My mare actually lost the majority of her tail hair as a result of a fungal infection. It's taken nearkly three years for it to grow back
