Fatty, who is not ridden, has a scabby area in his right armpit and a patch on his tummy towards the front , he's also itchy and scabby on his left hindquarter which I notice he is rubbing when he comes into the stable. He's a fairly hairy 10 year old sect C, overweight but healthy apart from that. I noticed that his bedding was a bit thin in places so wonder if he's got it from lying in the wet. He now has a nice thick bed and I'm washing him with a very dilute solution of hibiscrub and putting sudocreme on him. any thoughts of what it might be and any better suggestions for treating it. As long as he has his nose in something to eat, he doesn't mind me messing around with the area although the bit he rubs looks quite sore.

The armpit and tummy could well be caused by urine a bit like rainscald in appearance, often worse at coat change time , I would probably avoid the hibiscrub once it has had a good clean as it can stop healing, use a generous amount of cream to keep it protected and encourage hair growth. Some do get scabby armpits and benefit from a once a week clean and application of any cream to moisturise it.

Thanks, I'll do that. His coat is changing and until recently it's been quite warm and humid so he might also have been getting a bit sweaty.

I had one who had an armpit that sounds similar. I realised that he was sleeping with his back foot stuck in it, causing the scabbing.

Our ID gets scabby armpits if she is washed, but not dried off properly...

Hypocare spray sorts it out very quickly. The stuff from horseware.

Any feathers? Those flippin mites can climb up!
Not really, I did wonder about that as he had a few little scabs on his legs a little while ago but I washed them with very dilute hibiscrub and they have gone. I saw his owner today and she says he's never had a problem with his skin before and he is looking better today, so I am hoping the sudocreme is working it's wonder.
