I have a heavy feathered cob which I have owned for almost 6 years. This year he has scabby back legs just above his hooves. Where he has been itching them he has caused them to weep. Previously I have been able to deal with the odd scab but this year I am miffed. He has been on scratch classic all summer, and previously had a course of dectomax injections. His legs have never been this bad. I am currently using Hypocare (now rebranded Hypocare Mudfever) and have also used wound powder on them when weeping. Please has anyone got any suggestions?

Has your vet looked at the problem, and taken some skin scrapings to identify the issue?

Yes the vet has looked at him. He had been treated for feather mites using the Dectomax injection. I have since had the vet visit him again today and he has told be it is like a severe case of eczema and is on a steroid based gel. I have also gone back to using Pig Oil and Sulphur on his legs as suggested by the vet.

Not sure if this will help but ive just treated a nasty bit of mud fever with nizarol. (Shampoo, get from boots) I diluted a bit in a spray bottle, squirted onto a few scabs, let them soften, then gently picked off, rubbed a bit more diluted nizarol in and then dry. Slapped on some sudacrem, then couple days later tackled a few more scabs. It works better than anything ive tried so far!

Be careful with the pig oil - it made my mare's mallenders worse and she ended up with dry scabby skin all down her legs. You could try clipping his legs, washing with hibiscrub and then plastering in emulsifying cream - I am able to keep on top of my mare's mallenders with this. Mallenders seems to be a form of severe eczema too so this regime might help??

If it is eczema, you could clip and then apply a 1% hydrocortisone cream. Just make sure you tell the pharmacist its for you! Dont use it long term but a week or two should calm things enough to switch to an emulsifying cream, or the trusty Sudocrem.

Second treatment with Nizoral. It's the best stuff to treat Mud Fever, Greasy Heel, Rain Scald (rot). It is anti fungal and anti bacterial and really works well.

You know what i'm so impressed i'm seconding myself! Really impressed with the Nizoral - just knocked the mudfever straight on the head. I'd already got some for rainscald. Mine has a tendency to get itchy in winter, doesn't help himself by taking his rugs off and generally being filthy. So i use a diluted spray of nizoral when he starts getting itchy and it sorts it right out. Tried it on the mudfever and its sorted that too. Big thumbs up : )
