Hi, my 4 year old has a gathering of scabs at the back of her heels on each hind leg. It's very strange, at first I left them thinking they'd heal. Then after a week soaked them with salt water and they fell off and no wound was underneath?! They gradually build up again. I've been putting sudocrem on and this makes the scabs peel off but they come straight back! Does anyone have any ideas? Was thinking maybe sunburn but surely she'd have it elsewhere? Thanks

Feathery legged cob by any chance ?

No she's a clean limbed ID with no feathers because I trim them off! She has very sensitive skin and her heels were pink before so I don't know if it's a reaction to something... can't think what though :|

Wouldn't she need to be feathery? Also wouldn't my other horses have the mites as well if she did? She's not stamping her feet or irritated by them

The old fashioned description is sallendar and mallendar, or something similar. I have an ID x Clyde mare with them on the back of her knees and the front of her hocks. She has, or would have if allowed, hugely feathered limbs.

I keep her clipped, decotomaxed, front lined and lime washed. I find Boots Derma Care salve (£8 a big pot) keeps everything under control, but I do have to keep the salve on regularly. So far it seems a case of control rather than cure the problem.

It seems to be an equine psororisis (spelling !) sorry you know what I mean. Lots of potions and methods of controlling it. Pig oil, sulpher, hoof to heel cream, E45, dermasole etc.

My clean legged pony has had these scabs every summer for years,{ just on the back heels} I tried every thing on the scabs which never worked, never in a million years did I think it was mites, no itching, my other horses didn't have them, then I tried the frontline, no more scabs, every few days I will put pigoil on his heels { which are also pink} this is the first summer he hasn't had them.

thank you for that, it's very helpful! yeah psoriasis (I used spellcheck hehe) seems likely as she is very sensitive skinned so can be prone to skin problems.

Lovely thanks, will deffs be trying that. Sounds very much like Nelly's problem. Never would have thought of mites though!! Just presumed if one had mites everyone else in the field would.
