After competing my horse today (TB x ID) , I washed him off as he was very warm but tonight, when I brought him in to groom him (he's hunter clipped and I use a body brush) he was flinching, dipping his back, fidgeting and clearly had a sore back where the saddle had been. Last week I bought him a cottage craft white dressage numnah with some seams and a blue backing. I'm not sure if this has caused a sore back, or whether I hadn't washed the sweat off enough or whether I was too quick to remove the saddle i.e. scalded back? I'm waiting for the saddler to check his saddle etc in the next couple of weeks.

As his back felt hot to the touch and he was very unhappy, I applied aloe vera lotion and rugged him up with a lightweight rug. Has anyone else experienced this with their horse? If so, how have you treated it? My guess is I'll not be able to ride him for a little while so will have to lunge him instead.

Wondered about getting him a part sheepskin/part cotton Griffin Nuumed numnah as he's high withered. Anyone else tried it?

My mare is exactly the same - anything but the Griffin you have described brings her back up in lumps and will actually leave raw marks - with the Griffin she is fine.

Hope it works for you too!

When her back was bad, I washed it with hibiscrub and then put aloe vera on - I didn't ride her for about a week, but hers was really quite raw - it did heal really quite quickly though!
