scan- how soon?

Now!

14 days onwards but its best to scan as close to 14 days as possible as this seems to be the optimum time for pinching a twin. I then re scan at around 28 days for a heartbeat and again at 42 days to make sure the mare is still in foal. Most pregnancy losses occur before 42 days.

Good Luck with your scan and hope your mare is in foal x

Thats double checked a question for me too! I thought it was 16 days, but someone else has said 14 so Im clear now! Out of interest, the stud Im taking my girl to cover every other day, so if she is covered say mon and weds, should the scan be done to the mon covering or the weds covering?

Ideally, you should time your scan 14 days (give or take a day) from the day of ovulation. USUALLY, a mare ovulates the day before she tries to kick the stallion's head in!

If your mare is covered on Monday and Wednesday - and says FOD on Friday, then I'd go for 14 days from Thursday!! While a good vet can spot an 11 day vesicle, he may NOT spot the 10 day vesicle that snuck in under the radar - so don't go TOO soon! But you MUST scan no more than 16 days after ovulation - the vesicle/s become implanted in the uterus on day 17 - makes pinchinga twin MUCH harder!

Pending if the mare has been scanned before insemination we scan in Holland at 18 days. If a mare is scanned before insemination you know if there are 2 follikels or not. We also scan the day after insemination to see if the mare has ovulated or not.

The view on 18 days is much, much better then on 14 days. So, if you know there is only 1 follikel, scan on 18 days.

In theory, that's fine - but more so for AI than natural cover. MOST mares will have a dominant follicle at covering, and a couple of smaller ones waiting in the wings! Fresh semen can last 3-4 days in the mare, chilled a little less, and it's amazing how quickly a small follicle can advance (and ovulate!) It only requires one hardy spermatozoa to be hanging on in there and you could have a 16 day vesicle - and a 12 day vesicle (which might be missed!) 14-16 days is safer! A GOOD vet can spot an 11-12 day vesicle (particularly if cysts have been mapped in advance!) - and if in doubt, a second scan at 18 days can confirm.
