Depends what you want to scan for! If it's just pregnancy, I personally think it's a waste of time, it's obvious enough if you are patient enough! If it's because bitch is getting overlarge, then it's a good idea to know how many pups are in there. If it's only a tiny number then you are pre-warned that she might need a caesarian and can act accordingly.
Never heard about being bad luck unless he means you might count your chickens too early!

Just re read this! How stupid is that?!
I did mean (as you would have guessed but for anyone else who thinks I'm a complete fruitcake!
) if only a few pups which means they might grow huge, you might need a C but should be alright with a normal amount of pups (what is normal for one of those or are you into the great unknown?!) Does that make any more sense?
Lol yes! Well C sections are hereditory... and her mother hasn't ever had one so fingers crossed. I'm hoping for 6 but her mother consistently produces 10/11
Oh how exciting..... i am too going through the same thing at the moment, my bitch is hopefully 13 days pregnant with her second litter, i didnt have her scanned last time and everything went well with 7 healthy pups born and all survived.
This time around i used a stud dog that was slightly bigger than her and i know it is silly but i am worring about the chance that the puppies will be to big for her, and want to know how many just to be on the safe side, but she is so scared of going to the vets im also worried she could lose her pups through stress.
So gonna just hold fire and just hope it all goes well so as not to upset her!
How far along is your bitch? by the sounds of it she is about 4 weeks, am i right?
Please please please keep us informed on how it goes.
I bred GSDs for 20 years, only had the last few bitches scanned. That was purely because a local farmer who scanned sheep wanted to move on to doing dogs too, and asked to practise on mine! It didn't upset them in any way, just involved some oil rubbed on their tummies and then the ultra sound unit moved over them. I found it fascinating to watch. It actually proved useful with the first bitch I had done as she appeared to finish after 5 pups but had shown 7 on the scan, and ended up with a c section because of uterine inertia. But would have picked up on this with post whelping check. However if you think the experience would stress your bitch then Ii wouldn't bother with a scan. You will know by about 5 or 6 weeks if she has taken anyway. Good luck.
Oh and would not totally agree about c sections being hereditary. The one above was the first in 5 generations of brood bitches. Her daughter had a litter of 8 with no problems. However some breeds are definitely more likely to need them due to head size etc.
Millie is a weimaraner.
I have also planned my whelping box but need to make sure she is actually preggers first, its gonna take up most of my dining room...lol
So your bitch is nearly 2 weeks ahead of millie, good luck and keep me informed on how you go on.
How exciting!!!
Is that the Kay White book you are talking about, I always used to recommend that to novice breeders, it has some very good advice. If she says it is hereditary perhaps I am wrong, but certainly do not think it is commonly known. What I would say is that if a bitch has one c section she is more than likely to need another next time . Not an issue with my one bitch as she haemorraged (sp) very badly during her section and was spayed at the same time, but I wouldn't have mated her again anyway. Regarding your girls scan, if she hates the vet I think I might be tempted to forget about the scan. She will probably be showing a change in shape anyway by the 11th. Its usually between the 4th and 5th week I used to be at the "yes she is, no she isn't" stage, and then suddenly when they get to 5 weeks there doesn't seem to be any doubt. Good luck anyway whatever you decide. I agree with you that about 6 is a nice number, double figures are always hard work. One thing you can guarantee is that whatever sex you have bookings for the litter will be predominantly the other one!
