I took my JRT dog to the vet yesterday as he has suddenly started acting very scared in the house.. He is sat on me shaking as I type. Nothing has happened that I know of but a couple of days ago he started acting scared downstairs. He is fine upstairs and if you turn your back on him he runs off upstairs. The vet has given him valerian to help calm him down but it hasn't made any difference yet (second day). I don't really know what to do with him. he is also fine in his crate which is downstairs although his ears are always back and he isn't looking happy.

Any ideas?

I don't think so - he has been alone for less than an hour in that last week or so - and then he has been in his crate. I just can't think why he is suddenly so scared.

Could he have had some sort of scare downstairs?

My female suddenly takes a fright when out on walks and has bombed off home in the past, so I have to keep her on a lead.
CALA has given me some good advice, it could be something completely imperceptible to you or I but he could be aware of it and remembers that it happened downstairs.

Have you made a massive fuss of him?
Sometimes that can reinforce fear.

Well that's what the vet thinks. However, his sister is fine and behaving as normal and they are rarely separated. I just don't know what has scared him so much.

Are they similar in personality?
Mine are litter brother and sister. Brother isn't scared of anything, totally laid back, sister, if she hears a squeaky tree branch, will jump out of her skin and run.

I know it is hard, but try not to fuss him too much as this can make the dog think 'oh my god, that WAS really scary' and perpetuate the behaviour.

They are very different. Sister laid back - smart - easy to teach. He is a complete wimp at home and an aggressive so and so out on his walks. He hasn't changed on his walks - just at home.

So there is a chance something has happened that has affected him and hasn't fizzed on her. Loud noise? Slip on the wooden floor?
Like CALA said to me, it could have been anything.

I understand where you are coming from - my boy is a saint at home and hard work out, female is a nutter at home (runs in circles, yappy) and very biddable out.

Why do we do it again?!
