How do you know if your horse is genuinely frightened of something or just taking the piss or having a strop?

My horse won't stand alone on the waggon, but I'm not sure if he is scared of being alone on the waggon (he turns out, stables, hacks alone) or having a strop because he wants to get off with his mate.

Perhaps something happened in the past? Ned still won't go in because he had an accident which scraped all the skin/fur off his back. That accident occoured when the horse in front was taken off before him.

Maybe, but how can you tell if he is just having a paddy or genuinely scared

He can be a stroppy bugger when he wants to be

Horses don't wake up in the morning and think "how can I annoy my human today". It's your job to find a way to make him feel that the trailer is his safe place where he wants to hang out, regardless of whether he doesn't want to be there because he is afraid of the small space or he is feeling a natural instinct to be with his friend.
