In 48 hours time i would of had my operation to repair my finger that my horse damaged back in june.
Im so screemish at my own blood etc,and what makes this worse is that im going to be awake for the op

Sounds horrible! I've always wondered what I'd do if had to have an op where you have to stay awake

I wouldn't like it much

I hope it goes ok

At least once it's done you'll be on the road to recovery

Good luck x

Look on the bright side, there is far more risk if they put you right out with a general so this is the best option - you'll just have to give yourself something else to look at other than whats going on.
The not riding bit is a shame but you'll only be missing the worst riding months of the year - why don't you spend the time during the op focusing on your plans for getting your horse(s) going once you're back in action - plan a fitness regime and think of your goals for 2009.
Failing that come home and open a bottle of wine x

don't you have choice whether your awake or not? If it does worry you i think you can request to be asleep so it doesnt bother you. try not to worry- even though your awake you won't feel or see anything. just keep breathing and imagine yourself somewhere else!

I had my broken finger realligned and pinned while awake. The worst bit was when they put the local anaesthetic in to be honest. I was pretty nervous, but I had a lovely nurse talking to me about my horse while the surgeon was drilling away! I was kept quite involved in the procedure though (at my request) and he kept showing me the x-rays as he was inserting the pins. There was no pain at all, but the sensation is pretty weird (especially as I could feel the drill vibrating through my bones!). I think if you are really panicky, then you can request a general, but if you can have it done under local it's really not too bad, and I went home pretty much straight away and didn't feel so groggy as I did when I have had general anaesthetics in the past.

Out of interest, what have you done to your finger?

I kind of know how you feel. I broke my finger and had it pinned back together, however I had my op done under ga. the 2nd op was done without anything. I thought the dr was joking when he said he would just pull the pins out without pain killer or anaesthetic. But tbh it was nothing compared to how i thought it would be. There was a nurse in with me and the dr and I took my mum for moral support. over and done with without me realising. Try not to think about what is going to be happening, the nurse will be there to help you out.
sometime i do wonder if it was best for me to have ga as I was dreadfully ill after (ga/morphine dont do me good with my asthma)
as for the not riding. I did mine at easter last year so missed the first couple of months of the summer. i wouldnt worry about missing riding over the next few months. youll be back in the swing of it for the early part of next year.

Dr-spring........My horse reared up and pulled away from me.Somehow the rope got caught around my finger.(it wasnt wrapped around my hand)My finger dislocated but went back in on its own.
I have had 1 tendon repaired, but my finger is still very bent, and sore.I have had scans and they think a ligament snapped off and got caught in between the joint, leaving it partially dislocated.
I have asked if i could be put right out,but they really dont want to.Not sure of the reason.Think they did tell me but i was in to much of a panic to take it all in!
This is my best time of year for riding,as my main passion is hunting.Think the wine will have to come out!

Oh no poor you

Mine was similar (was lunging and my horse p*ssed off) I ended up with the line around my hand and a spiral fracture to the middle bone in my finger.
I did ask if I could have a general when pinning my finger and they were very reluctant, but I think if you are really panicky then they will give you one as they will be unable to operate if you can't keep still!
I was told I wouldn't be able to ride or drive for at least 6 weeks, but the physio made me a splint and I was riding again (with my pins in) after 4 weeks.

This is how my finger looked (yellow things are caps on the end of the pins):

My finger is fine now, sometimes aches in the cold but generally pain-free. I have regained pretty much full use/movement. You'll be fine, the thought of these things is often much more scary than the actual procedure. Good luck!

They may want you to be awake so you can move your finger when they request you to - so they know everything is in the right place and working well?

Good luck...I'm sure it will all go fine....as others have said- its a rubbish time of year anyway so just take it easy for a while....

Im so glad im not having pins in mine Dr-Spring!
I dont think i could cope with them.Stitches are bad enough for me to cope with.Im such a whimp!
Hopefully this time it will be sorted out,as it is still painful and i cant grip, which makes holding reins interesting.
At least i can get mum to do the dishes on christmas day.I told her that i was buying her rubber gloves for her presnet. She was not impressed!!
