My 3yr old turned on me this morning in the stable. I went into him, he went to the back of the stable so i walked up to him for him then to walk back to the door do a little rear and start kicking out at me. I was stuck in the corner of the stable with two feet flying at me:(, luckily he didn't back up so was just missing me. Called for my mum to put a headcollar on him over the door and then he stopped.
Don't know why he did it, nothing was different this morning and he isn't usually nasty. and not sure how i would of got out if mum hadn't been there.

He seems fine in himself, is now happy out in the field, was a bit joggy when led out there but thats usual.
The other two stabled next to him did go out before him today which they have done many times before but thinking about it he has been out first all this week.
He isn't usually nasty though.

Seems like you need to take control of this now. Perhaps you should leave a headcollar on him or put one on the minute you go to the stable and tie him up, then do a few minutes work like - move over, stand, pick up feet, just so he knows you are in control. Don't give him the opportunity to turn his back to you, keep control of the front end. Then do the same sort of stuff on the yard or in the box when you bring him in. Don't put his feed in the corner of the stable either, put it in front of the door.

It may be spring grass. I wouldnt go into the stable to get him. I have always been told to make the horse come to the door. This is so that you dont get trapped in corners or have to dode hind legs to get headcollers on.
Im quite lucky my mare always comes to the stable door when im near it. I would try to encourage the horse to come to you not you go to him. Makes life much easier and a lot safer.
Hope you are ok

He will do stand, over, back, have feet picked out etc. knows to back up when i take feed in his stable and goes to it once its down and i have backed away.
I waited for him to come to me when putting his headcollar on this morning.

Is this the same pony that had a tummy ache/wind/ poss colic yesterday? If so, could his behaviour be linked to feeling a bit 'off'?

Yeah just a bad day yesterday. Both seem back to normal today, 3yr old was fine coming in last night and has been good this morning going out:) hopfully the kicking was a one off.

Whilst I agree with most things said here please don't leave a headcollar on in stable (fine if you're there, tied up away from door etc) only we heard a horror story from a local yard, the woman had been mucking out, left the horse in the stable, went to the muck heap and by the time she came back the horse was dead, it had go its headcollar stuck onto the bolt, panicked and broke it's neck. I don't usually do scary posts but please don't do it.

I don't really like leaving headcollars on, the only times i have left a headcollar on in the field (never needed to in a stable) i used a fieldsafe headcollar.

That sounds great, it's disheartening when they behave like twonks isn't it? Your plan is to continue with the stable manners lessons, that's good. Do this 2 or 3 times per day. Just put this behaviour down to an abberation for now, the second it gets worse come back to HHO and ask for advice. Tomorrow make sure he goes out second out of the 3.

Does he usually go to the back of the stable when you enter it? Just sounds to me that maybe "someone" has whacked him or something? A friend had her beautiful, even tempered horse smacked about the head by the YO just because he put his head over the door with his ears back when the YO fed her own horses. He then started to retreat to the back of the stable whenever anyone came near, for fear of being smacked without good reason.
She moved yeards, needless to say, once she had realised what was happening.

The other two are owned by someone else so he either goes out first or last as we are on a DIY yard.
It is dishearening as i know he knows his manners and can behave well, I am working on manners in and out of the stable.
He does sometimes wander round the stable and come back to me, I really don't think anyone would hit him and hope they don't and i know i don't.
