One of my horses has an old large scar on his hock where a huge sarcoid was removed. It is on the inside of the hock, not a place you could cover with a bandage or a boot. In the summer I put cornucresence hoof ointment (the thick greasy one) on it. This is the only thing that stays on all day in the field and keeps the flys off. In the winter I put E45 cream on it.

I this ok or is there something better to put on a large hairless scar about 3 inches by 3 inches?

I have a huge scar on my arm from a riding accident and was advised to buy vitsmin e capsules that you swallow, but to stick a pin in it and spread that over the scar. It's really good for the condition of the scar, makes it much more pliable and comfortable. But be warned, it's really gooey and sticky!
