Scary dogs

Every now and again I order from a little local Chinese restaurant for delivery. Now that the weather isn't cold I often have just the storm door latched. The past 2 times I've had delivery my dogs have scared the snot out of the delivery people. Tonight I was telling them to get back and the delivery man backed down the steps. I guess the heavy front door makes a difference.
 
You can't really blame them though - so many people have badly behaved dogs that they let bounce all over people...

Mind you, many years ago my address was banned from delivery by Domino's pizza because my 12 week old Rottweiler puppy came to the door with me. The delivery guy ran away (the puppy hadn't moved from the door way) until I locked the dog away. Then went back to the shop and claimed the puppy attacked him! I haven't ordered from Dominos in the 16 plus years since :)
 
As dog lovers, I think it’s hard to imagine that some people are frightened of dogs. But there are people out there who don’t have any dog experience, or maybe have and it hasn’t been a positive one. My mum used to be very wary of dogs but then we got our own and she is now absolutely obsessed with dogs and a real ‘doggy’ person. Previously, she would have been frightened if a big dog came up to her.
 
Having two "scary" looking dogs I always try to appreciate that not all people like dogs and some are very frightened of them. GSDs are often perceived as aggressive and potentially dangerous and so I try my best to ensure my dogs are ambassadors for their breed and don't interfere with anyone else. Living remotely though with farm machinery, stock and working dogs which seem to be a target for thieves, I am happy for my dogs to show their guarding instincts when strangers are about.
 
I would be quite embarassed if my dogs scared the delivery people. They know sit and quiet but I still wouldn't expect a courier to walk towards or past them, I'm the only one who knows they wouldn't do anything.
 
Delivery people always get serenaded when they come to my door..... usually by a gobshite terrier ? I’m not sure if my lot classify as scary (never had a delivery person run away or back away) but they do sound like the Hounds of the Baskervilles when they get going ?

Having said that, they never ever get the chance to interact with delivery people - it’s not appropriate IMO, the people need the chance to do their job without hassle?

Absolutely NOT saying your dogs were hassling the delivery person OP, I think that was all about perception!!!
 
Don't get me wrong, I know that people are usually scared of GSDs. I try and make sure mine are under control when ever we meet the public. I just thought it was odd/funny that 2 delivery people that have been here numerous times were suddenly afraid of the dogs.
Also, the dogs heard the people before I was aware that they were here. So the dogs were correct in alerting me and moving towards the door.
 
I agree - I’m not fanciful and I’ve lived on my own for quite a few years now, but as a single female I’d still much rather know someone was there!

Not that there is any choice in the matter now I have George ?

I often wonder about people’s perceptions of greyhounds to be honest - Ace is 6 stone of very muscular dog and is about the size of a GSD (32” at the shoulder) but they don’t have the same image that a GSD, Rottweiler or other guarding breed does? Having said that, I’m never concerned about wandering around the woods in the pitch dark with a head torch when I’m walking them in winter, I have every faith in my boys ❤️
