Scary fall - thank god for my hat!

On monday, I took my mare for only her 4th ever hack. We went with a bombproof companion as she's very spooky and highly strung and I wanted things to go well.

We met cars, a van and a tractor towing a muck trailer, all of whom were fab and stopped to let us ride past saving my girl from having heart failure.

We went past sheep, a barking dog and wheelie bins with only minor spooking and snorting and I was full of pride :)

That's when it all went wrong! We came to a field which my hacking partner said was fine to ride through. I've never been that way before so presumed as it looked fine, she must be right. I went first and as soon as we entered the field, I realised that under the lovely green grass, it was infact very water logged. My girl began to panic and plunge as she lost her footing and was sucked down into the ground. If she'd gone forward, we'd probably have been ok and got onto more solid ground. But she tried to back up out the way we'd come. She couldn't get her back feet out of the ground quick enough and ended up going over on top of me. As she went to stand up, she somehow managed to stand on the side of my head! My ear immediately went numb and I was convinced it had been ripped off as there was a bit of blood.

However, I must have been the luckiest person in the world as I only have a small graze, a swollen lug and a black eye. I think since the ground was so boggy, as she pushed her foot onto my head to get up, I sank down which stopped any severe damage. Plus, of course, my hat probably saved me from horrible injuries!

My poor girl is still very stiff though and I've been massaging her and magnetising her to the max! She's got the physio on sunday and I've put her on some Danilon for a few days to help her aches and pains.

I feel gutted for her as it was me that put her in that situation and she'd been a total star that day, dealing with all those scary things and being so brave! Even leading her the mile or so home, she was fab.

Any other suggestions on how to relieve her soreness much appreciated :)

I probably should have gone to A&E as was very sick at night and had a thumping head for 2 days. However, I'm a nurse, the worst kind of patient. Feeling great now though! Painkillers are my friend!
