I will cut a long story short...

but basically went for a hack on saturday with another horse on our yard, we went on a bridle way that my friend uses very regulary but it was my first time.

Anyway there were a number of gates to get thorugh (not all horsey gates either) we came to an area where we went through a gate there was a horses field on one side and a very steep bank on the other my fiernd stops to look at the horses when I notice their field gate is wide open, and the gelding is coming straight out and makes a beeline of my mare (we were both on mares) mine in season as well!!.

The only way out was through another gate but my mare was trying to get away from this loose gelding and it was all I could do to hang on. I turned sideways and hit him squarely in the face with my whip thinking he will back off, but this dosent stop him, now he starts trying to herd my mare and when she turns to bolt he is right on her tail chasing her she is getting more and more upset and gives him a heavy double kick in the chest twice and all he does is rear up and come again at us with even more determination. It felt as if there was going to be a really bad accident with me coming of worse and my mare being injured in her panic to escape as there was barbed wire everywhere..my friend grabbed the gate and opened it and we tried to make a run for it but he overtook me to block us, just then another horse appeared from nowhere and the gelding was momentarily distracted and we made a frantic dash for the gate...i made it through and me mate had to slam the gate on the geldings face to stop it(we were heading into a massive open farmers field so it was really important he did not escape) I have never been so frightened before.

Our horses were so spooked that I could not consider going back to try to put ti back in the field.

The thing that gets me is that there was no lock on the gate at all and it was wedged on the ground so it had not just swung open it had been left like that. There were two nice looking TBs in the field not freezemaked either,,anyone could come and take them.

I will not be going that way again....

Anyway thats my story off my chest...anyone else have problems on hacks or is it just me??

Sounds nasty! Good job you didn't get hurt.
Did you report the incident? It is just, my friend had her field opened like that by some nasty lads. Her TB ended up on the road and in a serious accident with a car. They knew who the guys were but could never prove it...

God how scary!!!
I def wouldnt be riding that way again.

If the horse in the field has proved to be a nuisnace then you simply write to the Access Department of your County Council and ask them to speak to the owner of the field (enclose a map showing the location of the field).
