I was playing with mine and my mums dogs in the field today, Buffy (staff cross) is normally friendly but has got into a few fights before, all of a sudden she set about Fudge who's a JRT!!! Then Willow the border terrier joined in too!!

She'd got hold of her by the neck!!

I managed to separate them and kept hold of Buffy while I got Fudge into the house.

They have lived together for 2 years so you'd think they'd have sorted out their problems by now?? Fudge is constantly growling at Buffy and biting her legs when she is chasing the ball etc., Buffy normally puts up with her but i guess she'd just had enough??

The poor little might was ok but a bit shaken, she threw up after and was looking a bit traumatised.

Hopefully she will have leaned her lesson and won't pester Buffy anymore but does anyone have any advise on how to stop this happening again??

Was Buffy in heat? A female dog attacked our girl a few weekends ago, and she is usually terribly friendly, but was in heat at the time and just picked her out and went for her.

No, she finished about 8 weeks ago.

Ahhh. Well, tis no excuse anyway. If they are not letting go of eachother, or one of the other, freezing cold water (hose helps!) right up their bums do help!

That's never worked for me.

I find, though you have to be very careful not to get bitten or to pull them, that the best thing is to twist their collars then they let go.

The problem with two bitches fighting rather than two dogs is that bitches never forget, so it could be that they never get over it. I have to watch what I do with Millie and Mouse for this reason

Works for some and not others I guess... but anything shocking is worth a try to see if it doe work.
I would've tried to shove my boot inbetween the dog who attacked my little 'un but I just didn't know her at all, so didn't want to risk it.
Ahhh, I didn't know that bitches don't forget.

What a pain!

Mums JRT's are boys and hold serious grudges after fights, so its not just bitches, they won't 'talk' to each other for a couple of weeks. We manage things better now and stop it before it starts.

Had my Inuits for 2 and a half years and they've not had one argument between themselves but the JRT's always try and pick fights...horrid little things at times!

Another Inuit breeder has a pure staffy and she's soppy as anything but she maintains a staffy will always turn on another dog at some point in its life.

I pulled Buffy off easy enough, I'm pretty much 100% confident she wouldn't bite me.

I think the water technique might work, but in the incident today by the time I'd got water little Fudge may have been minced meat!

Buffy is one to NEVER EVER forget!!! I'm worried that when I take her to the vet to be spayed she will fall out with me because she fell out with mum for ages when she went in for her last op! She is too clever for her own good!

I think you have hit the nail on the head there - Fudge the JRT can't just leave everyone alone, she's always trying to be top dog when she clearly isn't and is never going to be!!

Buffy tries to be nice but if she's pushed too far she'll go for it - and doesn't seem to do things by halves!! She is a lovely dog but I've seen her fight with a Rotti before and she really went for it! Little Fudge doesn't stand much chance really, but she's so stupid to try!! It's like me picking a fight with Mike Tyson!

I suppose thats terriers for ya!

She may have accidently bitten you though, I have two scars from puncture wounds on my left thigh where I got bitten, I was told never to get involved in fights but when one JRT is double the size and weight of the other..how can you not??

Just be careful that if it happens again you may get accidently bitten and remember if they lock jaws don't try to pull them apart.

Ok thanks. Buffy is about 5x the size of Fudge so you can see why I stepped in!

Fudge can be a wimp and looked quite shaken so hopefully she'll bother Buffy less now. She's scared of my pointer because she's boystrous and must have knocked her over and hurt her at some point so hopefully a good rag round the neck will make her back off a bit!! Blummin dogs - who'd have em??

I have also been told a rape alarm can break up a fight, but Ive never done this (never had to) and also I wouldnt want to damage their ears.

Another thing I have been told is lift up both their back legs (on one dog
laugh.gif
) but there is still the risk of being bitten I suppose.
