School hire how much do you pay..?

As my yard doesn't have a school I am looking to hire one.. I've noticed a yard near me has one and I'm thinking of asking to hire it for an hour here and there.. How much should I offer?

I would ask them how much they charge first, before making an offer. It varies a lot - we pay £20 per hour for an indoor arena and £15 per hour for an outdoor. But both excellent surfaces with plenty of jumps to use. Check also that they have insurance and that the arena is safe before you pay out for it. They may also charge extra if more than one horse is using it.

Our local equestrian centre charges £20 for the first horse, then £5 per horse thereafter for the indoor with jumps.

For outdoors we pay £10 for the first horse, then £5 per additional horse.

it varies - some places £15 - £20 an hour but Im lucky there is a wee local arena we can hire for £5 but that is really unusual

i wouldnt make an offer tbh, they probably already have a price they charge and may be offended I hope you get it cheaper but honestly, the one near me at a fiver is very unusual and its only because we know the owners and local people get to use it.

Closest good indoor is £15 /hour, local outdoors are £5 for half an hour, or £8-10 for an hour

Local indoor school charges £20 per hour - but you can take as many "friends with you" to split the cost.....

Local out door scool charges £10 per hour daytime and £15 in the eve if floodlights are needed.

The one I used to hire for jumping charged £15 an hour, £20 an hour for the use of the jumps too. I wouldn't make an offer, ask how much they charge.

One near me charges £5, but that's to share with their liveries coming & going too. Although to be fair they won't let more than 2 hirees in at a time, & even peak times 2/3 is the most you share with, & its a huge arena, I think 40 x 80. I'm a peasant though, I get it free for daughter & me sole use every few weeks in exchange for having his niece in with us & giving her a joint lesson with daughter. Just wish niece visited them more often!

Jessikaginger, why don't you join a local riding club and have lessons. I pay just £6 for a flatwork lesson (no arena charge) with a really good instructor through the RC - and this is in the arena that I would pay £20 for normally.

You may find cheap arena hire, but just check out the surface first. There is one near me that is just £5 (for as long as you want) but the surface is dreadful with deep sand and holes, so I just won't risk it.

My local outdoor one is £10 per session but can use any of the facilities for this incl the extensive off road mountain hacking, lovely.

The RDA indoor is excellent value, during the day it's £6 per hour, evenings if they have to open up especially its £10 then they charge an extra £5 for the jumps.

When asking the price make sure you specify if you want exclusive use or not. Echoing some if the answers above there is an indoor near me which only charges £5 if you share with their liveries, and its pot luck, sometimes it's busy and other times it is empty, but if you go a few times you might be able to work out the less busy times!

Second this,as a novice myself,the school is worth very little without the instructor.A good one will also banish your "we're not capable " thoughts.Have fun !

There is a fabulous 60x20 Charles Britton arena up the road which I use when our sand school is flooded! £ 10! Per hour.

These all sound like good prices too me but cheapest school with a decent surface round my way is £25 an hour.
But then I am fussy about surfaces I ride on.

See if they will give you a monthly rate for so many times per week....most places will let you do that esp if you pay in advance and it works out much cheaper...

I pay £15 an hour at one place for either a large dressage arena with floodlights, 20x40 indoor with lights or a large jumping arena with full set of jumps.

At another place we pay £10 an hour or £5 30mins for a 20x40 outdoor with a decent surface and jumps.

WOW! Reading the prices here, I think I'm REALLY lucky to have the large livery yard down the lane which only charges £5 per half hour for their huge indoor and outdoor schools which have that really nice Martin Collins surfaces. Liveries can come in too but they rarely do and even if they did, I don't mind as i know most of them any ways.
