What is the best way to teach your horse medium trot, so they don't just run and fall on the forehand?

Do it very gradually- just 2 or strides bigger and then back again so that you can maintain an uphill outline. Too many people try to head straight off on the diagonal and hence the horse gets lost and loses balance!

try using trotting poles further and further apart so the horse gets the idea

To maintain the engagement try a few strides off a circle or try a little bit of on and back for a few strides on a large circle. Allow the horse to take the hand a little more forward and open the frame, whilst maintaining the power behind.
