i know that most of you will suggest lessons-they are on the agenda...just wondered if anyone had any schooling suggestios for my horse who has developed a stubborn habit.
She's began to refuse to walk forward on an outline, only really really slowly or at hault.
Is there any schooling tips that might help get her going? when i use lots of leg she goes a bit nuts and shoves her head in the air.
thanks in advance...

You shouldn't need to use lots of leg, go back to the beginning and make sure she's consistently and reliably going off your leg in the first place. If she's not going forwards when in an outline, then are you sure she's working properly and not just "in a shape"?

As far as i can feel she's working properly-across her back and bringing her legs under her[one of the few things she does well!]
She's just had her saddle re-flocked though due to some ill fitting issues-do you think she might just need time to get back into the feel of using all of her back?

If she is not going forward, then she is not in an outline (sounds like you are just holding/forcing the front end in). Ignore head head and concentrate on getting her working off your leg into an even contact, she will only start to work in a true outline once she is working from behind.

thanks-looks like we're back to square one again :s
we went through months of building up back muscle to get her to use her head in harmony with her body.
She works her legs under her but her head goes about like a girraffe...then lots of walk hault transitions she comes down at hault and would walk away nicely. This seems to have stopped now...and only does it with little baby steps at a time...

I would say you need to make sure she goes off your leg and seat, and that you're not using your hands other than to keep her soft if you need to.

Do you have lessons or a good instructor you know can come over?

the best instrucor around here has a gigantic waiting list

i think i might go across to the local riding school(can hack across) try get a lesson from there. Although they never really taught me much about how to ride my horse "properly"

I agree, first get your horse moving forward & not worry about outlune. When he engages his back end then you will get him to move in an outline. So many people believe their horse is moving in an outline when he is actually just swan necking.
