Hi all,
I have a 6yo highland pony & would like to do some showing and low level DR.
We really struggle in the school, and currently trying to find an instructor (new to area).
In the meantime would appreciate any suggestions.
My main issue is that for alot of the time my pony overbends to the left, hangs on the left rein and won't accept the right rein. Every now and again he straightens and stretches ( i reward +++) but then reverts to bad behaviour to avoid accepting a contact on the right rein.
I know he is young but we aren't getting anywhere!
My vet has checked him out & razors his teeth. My saddle has been checked.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Ps tried endless twists, turns, circles etc but to no avail!
Thank you!

His left side is stiff laterally so he is happier contacting the muscles on that side rather than stretching them which he would need to do in order to bend right.

You first need to encourage him to be completely straight on both reins, get him forward in front of your leg without worrying too much about the front end, pole work is ideal as it is hard for them to be crooked when stepping over a line of poles, useful in all 3 paces. Once he is straight you should then find him more willing and able to flex both ways, do not expect too much just little steps in the right direction .

Do some exercises on the ground, carrot stretches done daily will make a difference, he will learn he can stretch to the right and the muscles on the left side will learn to move more easily, a physio check would be a good idea to help loosen him up.
