for a cob, my horse is quite forward going when schooling, however when i ask him to work on the bit he loses all his impulsion and slows right down! i know to get him working correctly he needs to be powered by his hindquaters, so any ideas why he loses impulsion? is it because when hes working on the bit hes just arching his neck rather than working from behind? or is it just because he finds it really hard work? its hard for me to tell as i never see anyone else ride him so dont really know what he looks like from the ground!

it sounds as though he is probably not engaged enough behind. I usually find lots of transitions and half halts will help this. If he is not used to working correctly it will take some time for him to feel strong enough to keep the impulsion up for long. Can you get someone to video you riding? then at least you can see for yourself how he is working.

Hattie used to do this. Cobs tend to find it alot harder than other horses because they are so big and heavy. I did alot of transitions and lateral work [ QUOTE ]
