Schooling?

When schooling your horse do you give them a break to have a stretch?

When you pick them back up again do they work better?

I have always given Monty a break to stretch midway through schooling but he has decided that after his break he no longer needs to work

Instead he decides he should try every trick in the book to get out of it

So it ends up in a fight before finishing our session when before he goes so nicely

Should I stop giving him a stretch and just do short schooling sessions with a good stretch at the end?
Any suggestions please as losing the will to live

The best thing to do is to start giving him lots of little breaks, every 5-10 mins so that he gets used to a break not being the end of his work.

It will get gradually better!!

I warm up on a long rein at walk and trot for 10 to 15 mins and then allow him to walk and stretch for about 5 mins. Pick him up and work for another 30 to 40 mins with a walk and stretch once or twice depending how hard we are working. He finishes at trot on a buckle end rein stretching down and then gets walked off. He knows he has finished only when we stretch at trot on that long rein.

i give my mare breaks, but that is because she started to think she was done every time I stopped and gave her her head for a little bit. This became very annoying when i had lessons and stopped to talk to my trainer.

She tried every trick in the book to resist work. But, once she gets the idea i get much better work from her!!!

Over the past month the fights have gone from bucking, napping, nose in the air to a simple pinning of the ears.

I believe a horse should do what the rider requires and wants it to do. i am not tolerant of the horse dictating the regime (I don't mean that to sound as harsh as it does).

I give Adrian a stretch 2 or 3 times in 45 mins. I make him do it properly ie free walk on a long rein a la dressage. He gets tight & cross if he's worked for too long without a stretch & is better afterwards.
