Hello,

I'm still a bit of a newbie on here, but you all seem to be extremely full of info so hopefully someone will be able to offer some advice! :)

I am struggling to find a riding school in the Edinburgh area that can help me progress on with my riding. I used to jump Fox BS and so school to an equivalent level (Nov/Elem?), but due to financial circumstances I had to sell up a year or so ago. I am now desperately seeking some schoolmaster lessons - I did ride briefly at Tower Farm, but that was definitely not what I am looking for (as those of you who know Tower will probably empathise!). I would love to be able to go down to Talland for a bit but I'm not sure it's feasible at the moment.

Any ideas? I have heard of Gleneagles but it's probably a bit far away for me unfortunately. I would be equally happy to go to a freelance instructor that could teach on their own horses, but I wouldn't know where to start looking.

Any advice would be MUCH appreciated! Thank you in advance kind H&Hers :)

Hello and welcome to HHO :)

What about contacting Joanna Barry as she is in West Lothian somewhere and if she doesn't have a horse to teach on will know what direction to point you in. www.jobarryequestrian.co.uk

You could also try Anne Montgomery at Appin - www.appinec.com as she specialises in dressage.

Apologies if it was not dressage lessons you are looking for - I am assuming it is as you mention Talland :)

Thank you both, I will definitely follow those up! I'm looking for dressage or jumping really, though I suspect it might be easier to find a dressage schoolmaster?

JenTaz - is that Cousland Park? I've had a scout round their website but can't find anything about lessons :( I might give them a ring though if you think they normally do?

Please do keep the suggestions coming, I don't really know the horse scene up here so all advice is much appreciated! :)

yeh that is cousland park, im thinking that appin equestrian in drem do schoolmaster lessons but not totally sure, can't really think of any where else, i know SNEC do lessons but its the oatridge college horses so they arent really up to scratch and depending on the instructor you get it could be a hit or a miss x

i had the same problem a few years back. I went to Appin and they had some lovely advanced schoolmasters for lessons.

I'm a bit out of touch with the Edinburgh scene, but is Houston Farm still on the go at Uphall - always used to be good for a bit of a "tune up"?

ETA Duh, always seem to forget that I AM actually on tinterweb and can check myself!

HF is still there and seems to say they have a wide range of beasties for jumping and flatwork......

When I was based in Edinburgh I used to go to both Appin wth Anne M who is just lovely - she trained our Edinburgh Uni team when I was still a student (dim and very distant past). I also went to Houston and loved it too. Depends what you want re schoolmaster. Mr C at Houston had me jumping 1m within days after a 5 year break (due to bad falls, broken bits, etc) and my husband went there to learn to ride and was cantering merrily by the time he had his second lesson!! He hunts weekly now... :) Would def recommend them!
