I came down with Sciatica on Saturday morning i really dont have a clue what ive done to cause it:mad:.
I was due to teach all w-end but cancelled everything as im in agony sitting, standing, lying down i can't get away from it never had it this bad before & it's all down the left side my left leg & left side of my lower back is is spasming.

Ive tried hot baths, hot water bottle, massage thanks to horses hand held Equissage but nothing is helping. I don't have a Chiro that can get me in quickly & tbh it's that sore i would dread a chiro touching me. Pain Killers are not touching the pain have tried high dose of Ibuprofen & since then Co-codamol, im having to muck out 3 horses a day one is on box rest it took me 3hrs this morning which is rediculous.

Really need to get rid of this quick anyone???

no sorry no miracle cure, i had it and the only way i could get comfortable was to lie forwards over a bean bag. depends where the nerve is being impinged. Heat may not help on its own again depends on cause - try cold, then hot then cold then hot. see which helps. Really need to get it looked at though.
how do i know - I suffered for months bearly being able to do anything and crying most of the time in pain - ended up having disc removed (big op) lots physio and 3 months off work and touch wood been good ever since. But at the time when happened, physio and chiro would help for a couple days and then pain would come back real quick. (my disc was in shreds though tbf so was serious - yours prob somethign moved and impinging on nerve - defo need a chiro/physio

You have my sympathy,. I get this from time to time - a legacy of riding wide iberian horses for years:(

Ibuprofin extra strength (over the counter from pharmacist) helps a little as does diclophenac (from GP), but both tend to give you indigestion over time :(

I have tried acupuncture, hot baths you name it:(

When mine flares I take co-codamol or co-dryamol....and anything else I can get my hands on! A friend gave me a couple od Tramadol once as I couldnt sleep due to the pain, but I found that co-codamol was better. (Note, I dont advocate 'borrowing' other people's medication - I was at the point where I would do anything to get some sleep!)
I really feel for you OP - at the moment I feel like someone is kicking me in the lower back and stabbing me in the legs, so Im dosed up on painkillers, so not much help to you!
Sorry!! Is there any way that you could get to the Drs to see if he/she can give you a muscle relaxant to help with the spasms? xx

Echo the cold therapy, my physio told me not to use heat but plenty of cold therapy, bag of peas or similar where the nerve is trapped, though not as comforting as a hotwater bottle it really did help.

Its a horrible thing and no quick fix, best thing is to get to a good physio / chiropracter.

Hope you're feeling better soon

QR - I feel your pain! I suffer from it as I have Scoliosis (curved spine) Its only in the last 6 months its started and it can come on with no warning!

A few weeks back I was stripping wallpaper to redecorate, and after a day of peeling walls, I sat down for a rest as my scoliosis was hurting. Well, when I went to go get a drink, I nearly fell to the floor! I couldn't put any weight on one leg, without a horrific pain in my bum area, and if I did put weight on my leg, it would just give way!

At the weekend I was walking around the shops with OH, and for no reason at all my leg gave way and I got "that" pain again! It was horrid!

TBH, I am waiting for an Oesteopath (sp) appointment, and also an MRI scan for my back, which may show up the Sciatica, but not sure.

Sorry for not having a cure, but I think its one of those things that there is no quick fix and its down to management!!

Just going to go down yard & borrow horses cold therapy pads thanks guys i never thought of cold therapy.:D I could do with getting to the Doc's now but earliest ive been offered is Thursday. I hate my doctors havent been for 4 years!!

Something that can help, is to lay on your back, and pull both knees up to your chest (if you can), this stretches the lower back where the sciatic nerve originates. It's not guaranteed to work every time, but it can help!

Strong painkillers cocodomol, dihydrocodeine, tramadol
Hot and cold compresses I bought cryogel off ebay and its the only thing that I find gives me some comfort. Unfortunately its really just a waiting game and trying to get swelling etc down. I found chiropractor made me worse but found massage, baths and relaxing helped.

Good luck can totally sympathise I am going to have an op on back due to damaged disc which then causes Sciatica.

You need to go the opposite way and arch your back to take the pressure from where the disc is pressing on the nerve, I always thought 'stretching' forwards was the way to go but it actually causes the vertebrae to close up where it needs to open a little (hope that makes sense)

Ask your doctor for muscle relaxants, they were the only thing that helped when used with painkillers, which didn't help at all without the relaxants!

Also, try lying on your side with a pillow between your knees and legs slightly bent, again this takes the pressure off. I had nine months of this before surgery and I have every sympathy with you!

only thing that cured mine was an operation as after a month not being able to stand or get out of bed it was the only option.
The only pain killer that made it in anyway bearable was pethidine injections after I was hospitalised.
Horrible condition wouldn't wish it on anyone, insist on a home visit from the doctors if pain is that bad, this was the only way I got decent pain relief.

Maybe worth seeing an osteopath, he usually sorted me out, although it did get to the stage when an mri showed up severe narrowing of the spinal canal.

Thanks again everyone, i don't think it is anywhere near as serious as some of you have suffered. It is horrid though, thanks Clipcloppop for your offer unfortunately your to far away otherwise i would of taken your very kind offer up.

I do Pilates so ive been doing some of the stretches & they do help but only short term relief.
