Hi all,

My boy is going into the vet school for scintigraphy and I was just wondering if anyone else would share their experiences. I've had it done myself but never had experience of a horse having it.

He's to go in on the Wed for a lameness work up then Scintigraphy on the Thurs and I can't pick him up until the Monday. I thought this seemed a little long, as they only said I couldn't see him for 48 hrs due to him being a glow in the dark pony!

Thanks.

My horse had it done at Newmarket equine hospital last October. He was absolutely fine afterwards. No side effects of anything. Sadly it didnt show up the problem (both front suspensory ligaments). It does show up everything so you may find a few little niggles that may be insignificant. They found minor osteoarthritic changes in my horses hock which were not significant and no one would have found if they hadn't have gone looking! So basically dont panic if it shows up a few little things. Hopefully it will help you find the problem.

Hope this makes sense and helps!

Good luck x

Thanks. Why did it not show up the suspensory damage on your horse?

Because it is a bone scan, not a soft tissue scan. It can indicate soft tissue problem but not as much as a bone problem.

Is yours not free to go until Monday because they don't discharge on the weekend?
My horse had one done on monday and she came home yesterday.

Maybe they have factored in treatment. ie. if they nerve block, they don't like to medicate the joint the same day.

Good luck, hope you get some answers.

Ah, I thought it showed any areas of inflamation. This concerns me, we went for the scintigraphy as he would difficult to nerve block, however I'm now worried it wont pick up something like PSD.

I'm not sure why I can't have him until the Monday, I assumed it was just due to the radioactivity but perhaps not.

Hopalong had this done, so can chat on Sat if you like? Although as far as I was concerned- they kept her in a couple of days and then chatted through results after, she was right as rain by the time I was able to visit/pick her up.

Agree with quirky- I was told it was to show up bone problems and in Hopalong's case it showed up a "hotspot" in her pelvis which they diagnosed as hairline fracture. It wasn't big enough to show up on x-ray but the tiny cracks in the bone absorbed more of the radioactive material than normal and so scintigraphy was able to give us a diagnosis.

Hope it all goes well. :)
