My horse had one about 4 years ago. He was a late geld (5 ½) & it would seem the stitch used to hold the cut didnt dissolve and caused the infection. 6 months later he was walking a bit bandy legged and suddenly the abscess burst through the original incision site. It was quite horrid but he didnt seem bothered. It was flushed and treated with heavy duty antibiotics but it didnt improve and eventually he had to have surgery. That was pretty gruesome and the wound after was not for the feint hearted. It had to be cleaned out everyday, he had to be hand walked to keep everything moving in that area and eventually it healed up and although he has a thickened sperm cord and is slightly swollen in his left testical, its never bothered him since. His infection had travelled right up into his abdomen and the biggest risk was that the infection was so deep that it might return, usually within a 6 month period. But he was fine. I think the key to success is how easily it is to remove the infection and then to stop the wound site getting further infection. Mine, typically, had the worse schirrous cord the vet had seen in 30 years of abdominal surgery. Its quite a rare condition these days.
What course of treatment has your vet suggested. Surgery was the only option for my lad and I believe that to be the case in most schirrous cords.
Prof Chris Proudman at Leahurst is an expert in them.
thanks for reply unfortunately we have been given the news that surgery is the only option, he is only 10 months old (homebred) totaly devastated and he is the only 1 with NO insurance !! looking at a costly bill now, vet thought it would be much cheaper than the quotes which we are now getting from the 3 hospitals which we will use. waiting to find out today where he is going. the prices scare me!! just hoping he doesnt have to stay in for long
mine was in a week and the bill was about £4.5k.
The cost is horrendous as you say. the good news is the recovery is pretty straight forward. If you can get him to Leahurst (Liverpool Uni) I can recommend Chris Proudman.
we are in scotland so its a bit far lol, he is going to clyde which is the only place nearby i like (had bad experience with vets at the dick vet ) so fingers crossed for next week
Hi my horse has just had scirrhous cord surgery and the wound after is horrendous....a huge gaping hole! Cant imagine it will ever close up and recover but Im sure it must do. Ive sent you a message( KautoStar1) to pick your brain as Im rather concerned and my vet who did the op is now on holiday for 3 weeks. Did you keep your horse stabled and walk in hand or were you told to turn him out?
