My Shetland is going in for surgery on his scirrhous cord following an infection after castration.

Can anyone tell me what to expect when he comes home.

E.g. Will he need to stabled? ( hates being stabled)

My horse has just (finally) recovered from his scirrhous cord surgery, his mass was the size of a grapefruit, so he was left with a huge hole that my vet stitched at the sides but left open to drain. I kept him in for the first few days and walked in hand 2/3 times a day to help reduce the selling, also cleaned the area with cold water hose morning and night. His stitches didn't hold for long and the hole was massive and I thought it would never heal! I went through a lot of despair and worry but my horse was fine in himself all the way through recovery. He was on antibiotics for weeks, although he didn't get an infection as the wound was open it was best to keep him on them. I definitely think my case was quite extreme, 9 weeks later the hole has filled in and Ive just started riding again, the wound is still pink but it is shrinking daily and his normal scrotal skin is growing over it. Good luck hope it goes well, my boy is age 6 and so think his mass was worse with him being older. Anything you want to ask feel free to email me as I could find very little about it ANYWHERE (jclhomeuk@aol.com)
