Does anyone out there ride a scooter? How much does it cost you to run?
What about you car drivers?

I'll be doing a 14 mile round trip every day sometimes twice a day if I don't end up just staying at the yard :D

I've put it off for years but now I'm looking to get my licence sorted because my big sis (bless her) is currently my transport to the ponios and unfortunatley that limits the amount of time I can spend at the yard because we have to work around when we are both free - after her kids are off to school and before and after work.

I'm trying to figure out what's cheaper to drive, a scooter or an old banger car because my budget is pretty tight but could really do with my own transport.

I don't know about scooters but I have a toyota yaris, very cheap! For your mileage I'd be using about 15 a week in fuel, road tax is 115 a year and my insurance for fully comp is 25 a month, but I'm 40 this month so in a cheap bracket anyway.

I used to have a 125 motorbbike, that would be like a scooter, a bit cheaper on the fuel but the rest pretty much the same :)

You might want to move this to soapbox.

Oops sorry! :o How do you move a thread?

Depends on your age and how long you've passed any ncb (doesn't sound like it if you've not been driving)...

My daughter is 20 and once passed her test, as a new driver, insurance will be ludicrous and could literally be thousands per year...

I'm the same as Welshie as I'm older and have a good ncb...

If you're starting from scratch, newly licenced or young; doing a CBT and getting a moped/small bike on the road will most likely be far less expensive than a car... There's some fab old bangers out there that'll probably still be running in another 20 years but the routine running costs over and above fuel may well be higher with MOTs, tyres, general maintenance etc...

Moped/scooter
by miles, over 100mpg and £16 road tax !!! however the downside great in the summer but wet and cold in the winter and you need to think about safety and actions of stupid road users, ..

i'm 20 and have a full car license but i chose to drive a moped due to it being SO much cheaper.
having just bought a horse and him costing me a fortune to feed, there's no way i could afford as car as well. my insurance, road tax, and buying a brand new scooter (my dad would not let me get a second hand one, it was a battle to get him to let me get my CBT!) cost me about £1300. for that amount alone i could only get insurance on my own car let alone buying one/petrol costs!
also, a fivers worth of petrol will happily last me 5 days, and thats going to the yard twice a day (its 4 miles away), going to the boyfriends and going to work / uni. its very economical.
you get used to being out in the cold, its really not that bad at all. just invest in a good pair of gloves and a good hi viz jacket (mine cost £25 from Robinsons and it is a god send) and you'll be fine =) and you never have the effort of leaving a nice warm car!
I would reccomend getting a 125cc + as a 50cc (which mine is) can be annoying slow sometimes. also, keep something like a towel or old tshirt in the seat storage because if it rains at least you wont get a wet bum by having to sit on a soaking wet seat!

good luck =)

I passed my cbt in oct last year, its not nice in the wet but far cheaper than doing my car test would have been. Bike was a cheapy 50 that OH did some work on £250, CBT £100
INS £98 TAX £16. I use roughly £3 a week fuel going to the yard and back twice a day, I put £7 a fortnight in it.
I wanted transport but hated the idea of a bike, i really love it now. Can't wait for the summer now I can get myself out to watch some shows.
The only downside is carrying stuff, I have under seat storage and a rucksack, big stuff still has to brought up by OH.

I have a motorbike (Honda DN01) and it's much cheaper than a car to run but in bad weather it's can be a nightmare...snow and ice it's a no go. Luckily I have OH's car to use on really bad days.
Bike licence cost £600 to get after lessons etc, leathers and helmet etc cost £450, bike cost 5k, insurance is about £545 and I can't remember how much I pay in tax, £20 in fuel a week.
My friend buys a new car every year...she spends £500 on a car with a years MOT and a bit of tax, insures herself 3rd party only and runs it in to the ground!!

I'm 27 and I'd be a new driver so it'll probably be hiked up insurance  Think I'll have to plump for the scooter as I don't think I could find the spare cash for a car :( I'll have to get the mothership or big sis to drive me in the ice/snow and bring up any bulky items for me but as big sis is up there at least once a day anyway I'm sure she wont mind :p

Thanks everyone for helping me out! :D
