Quick question on dressage scoring for eventing. Daughter did teeny ODE the other day. She did Prelim 7 (i think) and got a full set of 6s - a bit of a weird score - obviously 60%, if it had been pure dressage. I know that in eventing you get penalties and its the one with the least that does the best, but why did she get 48? I would have expected 40.....

Also is it right that in the SJ phase, you get 4 for a stop/pole and in the xc phase its 20 for a stop. Is that so that the xc counts the most? It just seems odd that you can have 5 refusals in the SJ, for one in the xc (though obviously you would be eliminated with 5 stops...)

Daughter asked me to explain and I couldn't! Thanks for the help.

i think thats its to make it so that the XC is the most important phase- after all, if people were wanting to do SJ or dressage then they would- its the XC that makes most people event i would have thought?!

i think you might have got 48 because that is the number of marks that you didnt actually get. have a look on your sheet and see how many marks you lost.

No its not. You should have got a 40 if she got a 60%. It is basically the opposite way round to dr, so your score is the % of marks you didnt get! Eventing is done on penalties, so the lower DR, the better as means the lower amount of penalties

umm, it depends what coefficient they multiply the dressage mark by to get penalty points, this depends on the difficulty of the test. as long as all the marks are multiplied by the same coefficient, it doesn't matter what it is!
for instance, Novice Test 122 is marked out of 210, and Novice Test 123 is marked out of 230, so they would be multiplied by different coefficients so that you got the same penalty mark for the same percentage in each, if that makes sense. i've done this in the scorer's tent, so i know i'm right on this one!

the different penalties for stops and falls in sj compared to xc are to try to maintain the relative influence of the 3 phases... xc is supposed to be the most influential, followed by sj then dressage. i can't remember the ideal ratios, i think it's supposed to be something like 5:3:2, or maybe 5:2:1, vaguely!

OK - well I have had another look. The total possible score was 240 and she gained 144 marks. So she 'lost' 96 marks. (240-144=96) The coefficient must have been 0.5 since she ended up with score of 48 (96*0.5= 48).

That must be it....quite confusing though!

Thanks everyone.
