Scottish Horsey Info Please!

My husband has applied for a couple of management jobs in Glasgow. He has worked for the companies before, but I have always lived in the South and have only ever moved a couple of miles away from my home village.

I want to support my hubby if he is offered either job and I am quite excited at the prospect of moving, especially as we would better off with the price of living up there compared to the South. However, I have only been to Scotland once (Glasgow airport for a couple of hours) so I'm pretty clueless.

I don't want to offend anyone, but is the Glasgow area horsey at all? We don't want to live bang in the city, but within commutable distance. I have noticed the surrounding areas are quite rural. General costs of DIY livery, Hay etc? Best areas to live? Any info really?

It might not even happen, but no harm in a little research is there?

There are lots of horsey places around the central belt, Glasgow, Edinburgh and everything inbetween

Awwww thanks! I heard the Scots were a friendly bunch! I think we would probably rent for a couple of months to get settled. Then move the horses at a later stage. Getting a bit carried away on rightmove as we would be able to afford a nice 3/4 bed detached house with land up there. Something we can only dream of down here

Hiya!! I live just outside glasgow, about 20 mins from the airport. My horse is stabled about another 15 mins from home. From yard I can get to Rowallan and ingliston within the hour and snec and kingsbarn just over. There is also places close by that run little local shows. If you need any more info about areas yards etc feel free to pm me!

i'm not much help as i'm perthshire based - but central belt seems v horsey so i'm sure you'll find somewhere nice
i moved from gloucestershire to here (followed a man who's now my husband) and lived here for 5 years now - love it i cant imagin living back down saaaf now although i miss summer! lol

The lenzie, Torrance, Kirkintilloch areas are quite horsey n close to city centre. I'm right in middle of Glasgow and Edinburgh and they are both 30-40 mins on train. Lots of horsey areas too.

Yes, pretty much any direction out of Glasgow will find a horsey area! I lived/kept my horse in Renfrewshire when I did my undergrad at Glasgow Uni and there was a very good 'horsey' community, with riding clubs, local unaff and aff competitions

I dont live in glasgow but live in a town in Fife which is about 50 mins away but have family in Cumbernauld area and when we visit, we drive by fields and fields of horses but yes us Scots are a friendly bunch and i'm sure you will have a hard choice deciding which of the many many yards to go to

Well just an update really....an exciting one! Hubby been offered a job in Bonnyrigg, near Edinburgh. He is going for a meeting this wednesday to get all the details. But looks like we may be moving! Anyone on here local? Its just us two, we won't know a soul!

I live near Bonnyrigg, lots of yards up here which are mostly DIY. I love it here, great quality of life to be had in Midlothian. Some really nice yards out Gorebridge way and masses of horses. Not sure about Bonnyrigg itself, but heres links to some of the yards in the Midlothian area

These are just the ones I can find straight away, loads more yards around though but I'll be here forever listing them. I've not been on all those yards to make any recommendations though...there'll be others that can put you right there.

If you don't live in Midlothian, East Lothian is another very horsey place with absolutely wonderful riding (the best beach riding!). East Lothian can get pricey though for houses as its very popular but some nice yards there. If you complete affiliated, you'll find the equestrian centres are all in the Central region. Suppose it depends on where you want to live and what you need. but can defo say you've picked a top place for having horses!

Hmmm. I live on the outskirts of Bonnyrigg. I can't bring myself to say I actually live in Bonnyrigg. You can form your own opinion! But I have to ask - who on earth is he working for in Bonnyrigg?! Unless its a takeaway or a betting shop I can't think of much else!!!

As for livery in the surrounding area, what do you want from a yard? There are now spaces most places due to the economic downturn. When I moved over here 3 years ago, trying to find somewhere with two spaces was a nightmare! There is a huge variety of prices, facilties and size of yards - just depends what you are looking for. Cheapest I have come across for DIY is £25/wk plus hay and bedding. Most expensive is £62/wk inc hay and straw. Most places include hay and straw with livery and are around the £40-£50/wk. Yards also ranging in size from 5-50 horses! So you will need to be a bit more specific about your requirements!

Well I've lived here all my life and have no idea what "och aye, eh wha?" means! I understand the first bit but what is "eh wha"?!?! Perhaps thats Glaswegian slang coz I've never heard it up here in the North East!!

Completely different lingo in the Central Belt from the North East
I even had problems with accents when relocating from the North to the Central Belt.
Bonus living here is you never have to travel far for top events and all the big centres are within easy commute and good access to different coaches and trainers even if you can't work out the "Weigy Twang"

OP, I live in Edinburgh and keep my horses out by Gorebridge, and drive through Bonnyrigg to get there! Feel free to PM if you want any info, I trawled many yards when I moved here 6 years ago!
