Sorry to ask for advice again! But my three week old foal is scouring, not badly just has a little on her legs ( now washed off) and is bright and feeding normally. Mare has been wormed just after foaling. I am presumingits either foal heat or the fact I've given the mares some hayalge in the barn to get them out of the rain. Question is would you give foal anything? Probiotic etc or just keep an eye on her?

Chocolate dipped strawberries for reading about my new saga! I think I've gone grey due to this foaling lark!

i believe foal heat to be 9-10 days after foaling, my foal is 3 weeks and 3 days old and mare has came into season today. so could be that or haylage, would just keep an eye on foaly , hope all is well

My little foalie was a bit loose on the mares foal heat and had quite bad runs on her first proper heat at about 5/6 weeks - some do some don't - my mare was wormed just before foaling too. I just make sure foalie's bum is clean and put a good load of baby oil on it to keep the skin from being irratated. A bit of live yoghurt would do no harm - as long as they are bright in themselves and feeding well then I wouldn't worry too much - just wear rubber gloves for bum cleaning as the smell is hard to get rid of!!!:D

Pro-kolin for foals is good for scouring - have you wormed the foal as we worm now before they are a week old with a wormer like Exodus (pyrantel) if it continues get a vet involved you cannot afford for it to continue for more than a few days as if they get dehydrated it can become serious.

Not anything to worry about unless the foal goes off his food.

Most foals go through this when mum first comes back into season afte having the foal.

To keep foal comfortable gently wash off the scouring, allow to dry then apply either nappy rash cream or some baby oil - just helps prevent the scour sticking to the hair and burning the skin. They can get quite sore bottoms with scouring, don't forget to put the baby oil on the undersifde of the dock as this can get sore too.

p.s. i have only seen my wee man poop twice on the day he was born!! i think he gets embarrassed :D

i know he does it as i find them in paddock/stable but just never witnessed him doing the deed! peeing, well that is his speciality :D
