This happens every year but ........

My old pony is now on hay at night, the hay is excellent hard hay because the other horses are in hard work and I buy the best I can get and it is very good this year.
The others have gone onto it fine but she is scouring, she is out all day and only gets one section at night but it has upset her . It was made in June so it is new but there is nothing from last year around.
She has two small feeds a day as well of chaff,sb and nuts.
I tried a probiotic but it made no difference.
This happens every year it does improve a bit but she is always really loose on hay!

Could you give her a hay substitute instead - like hi fi - or the special mix they make at places like the ILPH for old horses who have problems eating hay????

Dodson and Horrell showed how to make it on the Horse and Country channel programme which covered nutrition......

My TB is the same...has some diarrhoea from time to time when it's wet or the grass has a growth spurt. Vets reckon that her digestive system isn't too good so doesn't bother absorbing water...
Some people say feeding psyllium husk helps...but I haven't really tried...

If you tried pink powder I'm surprised it didn't work.. it is really good at stopping scouring.
You could try proper acidophilus from the health food shop and sprinkle the capsules over her feed. they are live bacteria as against freeze dried and need to be kep in the fridge.
I still feel it's the flora balance in her gut is out of balance causing this.

Thank you ,I have never heard of that where would I get some?

My vet sent me some...it's good for soothing the gut, apparently. You can also buy it in health food stores...for people (same stuff the vets sent me at great expense

which is probably the easiest route.
It comes as a sort of translucent powder which you add to the feed...has no taste...and turns to a sort of frogspawn like jelly with water...

There is a new product out called Norm-Prozorb made by Leverton. It contains a clay substance, electrolytes and a probiotic to improve the gut flora. I don't have all the ingredient names to hand, but you can look it up on their website at www.healthyhorse.co.uk
