Screaming Mare

Whenever she first meets a new horse she screams, very very LOUDLY and strikes out with her foreleg. This only happens when she is at liberty, never when ridden.
I've never known another horse do it with such conviction!!

I thought that this is what stallions do?
Is it a common occurrence in mares?

mine does it too usually when in season and she is generally really nice mare, she has a sniff then does it. My other mare does it all the time but she is a complete cow with other horses tbh

I think it bothers other people more

They tend to cover their ears and remark on what a terrible noise it is !!!!

She can be a grumpy, lazy moo but isn't too much of a bovva girl

My mare does it even when my other horse (a gelding) isn't even touching her.

My friend's horse on the other hand does it but does a little jump at the same time. All 4 feet off the ground. Very funny!!!!
