Scruffy Update - And a question about Tail Injuries..

Little Scruffy puupy is fairly growing up. Walking nicely on the lead now and growing into a lovely, polite gentleman.

However, he's been in the wars since last night - due to the imcompetence of my idiot sister. She was removing the matts in his tail with a matt knife thing (perfectly safe in the right hands) when he wriggled and she got his tail (which wouldn't have hapened IF she was using it right)

So cue lots of blood everywhere - and a trip to the vets. They kept him in and stitched it (needed 5 stitches

) and we were due to pick him up this morning. Mum went to get him and the bandage came flying off and blood everywhere again (though typical him - totally happy!!)

So he's being kept in again tonight, fasted and will most likely having that part of his tail removed (the bandage will just not stay on, he's so happy and his tail just wags so much) His balls are getting removed at the same time! (Should have been done last month though the stupid nurse was insistant that we should give it a longer thought about breeding from him!)

Bit worried about the GA, they are supposed to be sensitive to it but apparently every breed says this?

Just want to ask if anyone else has experienced this type of thing? Is it similar to docking? Or is it a ittle more complicated? Recovery etc?

Not had any personal experience but don't worry one bit! Have plenty of friends who have been through this with Irish Wolfhounds. Our own Wolfie went under GA 9 times in 5 years and each time was absolutely fine!!!! The GA now is so damn sophisticated that I wouldn't mind a pop at it myself lol! One of the best tips for tail injuries, though don't know if your cutie is a little too small, is get a piece of foam pipe lagging, the type with a split down it, bandage and then slip that over to protect from over waggyiness!!!! Hope your little tyke is well again soon and try not to worry!
 
Just off the phone from the vets, he's going in for the op this morning and will hopefully be coming home docked tonight (as opposed to just having the end of it removed, where the wound is)
I hope he wont be too miserable. I've been reading a few stories (mainly tales to be used against the docking ban) which say the operation is really painful. Hopefully wont be too bad, especially along with castration!
It takes a lot to bring this little guy down. Missing him lots though - can't wait to give him a cuddle!
 
My vets offer a pre GA check which puts your mind at rest. Costs a bit more but the health of my dog is priceless.
My lab injured her tail about 2 years ago and had to have about 2 inches removed. I experienced no problems at all except she was so funny going through doors etc with her big collar on.
Labs are renowned for always wagging their tails and her bandage stayed on well. If I remember correctly vet wrap was used to keep things in place.

The vets did say he really is a healthy chap and were happy to go without pre anesthetic bloods ( I think that was it) and I have to say, I think they might be right. My guess is that there fine - my biggest worry is that we were told by the breeder that they are a sensitive breed when it comes to anesthetic (though I presume Wolfies are too and with what woolly said, it's put my mind at ease a bit)
I cannot wait to see dinky little Scruff with a massive collar, he doesn't take to weird things like that well (he even chews your hand off trying to put on his normal collar!)
 
All has gone well, he's sitting in the vets looking very sorry for himself. Have to call again at 4 and we will *hopefully* get him home tonight!!

Looking quite sorry for himself too! He's just got a little stub bless him, all vetwrapped up. On a prescription diet for the next few days with some metacam and anti-b's. He still wee'd with delight when we went to get him!
The buster collar is huge on him, looks slightly daft!
Will maybe post some pictures later if he's not too camera shy!

He does sound as if he's been through the wars. Give him a gentle hug from me. He's turning into a lovely little dog, you must be a proud mummy!

I must say I am shocked at how many vets (in your case, a nurse) now seem to be tempting people with breeding!

He's really bright and has only just drifted off to sleep in the past half hour. Nice to see he's still bright and livey - castration has not had any effect on that!

I am ready to murder my sister, she's still mouthing off how he's her dog (he was originally a family dog, but I have most responsibilty for him now..) and doesn't seem in the slightest bit guilty for what she's caused.

Gina - I saw said nurse today, got a right "look" off of her, thankfully he'll be able to live in peace with my OH's future Scottie bitch
