Right, Ben turned three last year and was backed and hacked on... He obviously was weak behind and started to scuff his back hooves, making them blunt... Over time, as he built strength in his hinds this got better... Then we get to December and he has three months holiday, now we are coming back into work and obviously building back up the strength. Now he is/can be a lazy slug, although this last week he has found his mo Jo and is much more forward. Hind wise to begin with I could hear him scuffing his toes whenever we trotted and occasionally in walk. I should say that before we started work he had a full work over by a sports massage therapist and nothing was found in terms of unevenness or iffy muscles behind, only some muscle build up in the underside of his neck and poll from a haynet which was sorted and I binned the net. So now, when I ride out I hear the odd intermittent scrape... Far far better than he was, and I reckon we are just over a month into ridden work, his near hind is now fine, no scraping, but his off hind, that's what scrapes occasionally... Now he is due his sports massage so will ask her for feedback on this area, and I am crooked in my back but have now started riding with a back brace which keeps me straight, and as I said this scraping has seriously lessened and I reckon with work will go. But, I'm racking my brains trying to think of suitable exercises that may help strengthen his off hind. I really think the fault is down to me not using my brace sooner, but I want to help him to develop as evenly as possible. He had a full work up last year and no issues were found and at this time he was scraping. So I'm pretty sure it's just a weakness and a baby thing and that I've hindered the development of strength one side because of forgetting to wear my back brace.

Any ideas for helping the off hind catch up with the near hind?

The horse I am currently bringing back into work after an injury to his off hind is similar although he is not yet trotting, I use a physio and she found that because he is not using the leg properly it has now given him a sore back so Ben could be the other way round, if he is not even in his back it blocks from him using the leg properly.
Either way the exercises my physio gave me are helping, he has stretches before his work to loosen him up, he is walking over poles every other day, they are now raised as well as on the floor to get him using himself and thinking about lifting his leg using it fully. I also put a boot on just that leg to make him more aware of it. I then do more stretches after work and at any time I feel like doing them during the day, get your person to show you how to do ones that will help him loosen up do some carrots stretches as well, all good for the topline.
