My boys coat is looking awful just now -not particulary thick but lots of long whispy hair and very dull and scurfy - there are also a few bits of what looks like rainscald.

I gave him a full clip this weekend and hot clothed him with a bucket of boiling water mixed with hibiscrib.

Is there anything else I can do?

He currently gets a small feed with one scoop of linseed - maybe I should up this to 1/2 a mug? Or perhaps adding some vegetable oil?

He can be a fatty and is looking ok just now and I don't really want to put any more weight on him with the spring grass due to come through.

Any suggestions welcome!

J was the same this time last year and although her coat is horrible and sparse with long guard hairs, she is more shiny and not scurfy this year. I started her on 2 x scoops of linseed and forage plus balancer and it does seem to have helped. Is he on a balancer already?

He's on equimins tip top balancer plus the scoop of linseed - I'll up the linseed to see if that helps. It would be nice if it would warm up a bit so he could get some time out without his rug -I think that would help!

what weight does your scoop hold? I feed 200g a day if that helps...

Upping the linseed to a mug is a good idea and consider switching the balancer to a higher spec one such as Forage Plus will help in my experience. It is also iron free and iron can affect absorption of other minerals if in excess. Iron is generally not deficient in grass, hays and water. I would add yea sacc as well to help the gut.
Crawlies is another thing to consider but as you clip it is unlikely you have missed any. :)

dont want to worry you but one of the reasons i got mine tested for cushings was her coat had gone very scurfy and this was unusual for her......might be worth checking to see if he has any other symptoms just in case....hope its not as the medication is pretty pricey!!!!!

My cob's coat went quite scurfy when I started feeding him alfalfa and he even started coming up in hives, and he got cracks on the back of his knees.

The feed was the only thing that had changed, and after lots of searching, I found some articles that suggested the high nitrogen levels in legumes i.e. alfalfa & soya can effect skin/coat condition... I took him off the alfalfa chaff and he was better within days, and looking back, the other times he had been a bit scurfy, he'd been fed something with either alfalfa or soya...

Something worth thinking about maybe? Or some similar intolerance?

He's now on linseed, pro balance, graze-on and speedi beet and coat and feet never better :)

Micronised linseed. My horse has come out of winter looking shiny and well. Wispy (cat) hairs would suggest you have been caught by the changeable weather and your horse got cold. I have gone through numerous rug permutations since Xmas and every time I think I can start cutting down, the weather has changed again. I do use a lot,of elbow grease too but appreciate that's easier for me whose horse is fully clipped and in at night.
