When Toff is changing coats she gets rather scurfy, which is what's happening at the moment. She gets groomed every day, I have tried the usual, body brush/metal curry comb, dandy brush, flicky brush, cactus cloth, grooming stone thing, I just can't seem to get the scurf to stay away. She has a low trace clip and the clipped bits are ok. She is very shiny, which I know is the grease, but my tack goes white in seconds! Any tips on getting the worst out without a full bath as so cold? Got dressage next weekend and at this rate I will have to clean my tack halfway through!

Both Kossolian and Brewers Yeast are very good for coat condition at this time of the year; the old grooms called it blueberry time when the coats go dull and lifeless.
Is she rugged as if so, the weight of her rug should flatten the hair so you can't see the grease underneath so much and then you need to buff her up so she gleams (cactus cloth then terry towel are both brilliant)then the scurfiness won't show so much. On the day you could either use a very hot almost dry cloth to take off any specks of dust or use coat shine or whatever it's called just on her unclipped bits; make sure she has her feet oiled and is tidy with clean tack, a clean mane and tail too. Sometimes the more you disturb the grease, the worse it looks!

Ive got a show next week too and my Welsh Cob looks hideous. He's getting a hunter clip as of today/tomorrow though which then makes the scurf even worse as he's a very dark bay/black! I plan to do the method they recommended on here - hot water with soda crystals and Dettol on a cloth rubbed in well. Then spray to death with coat shine!

Thank you! She already has Brewers Yeast, must just be this time of year. She is rugged, good idea about the hot cloth, will do that

Thanks

That's the one down side of darker colours, the gresae shows more! I don't own any coat shine but the other method sounds interesting, thanks

My bay horse is like this too. Its weird but the most greasy/scurfy horses seem to be bay. I also have a black horse and her coat has no grease or scurf at all

Do you put the Brewers yeast in feed or what? What other benefits does it have.

Have had one glass of wine too many so may seem dense, what are soda crystals again? and why the Dettol

Thanking you

I dont use Brewers Yeast, but I do add Soya Oil to feeds which help with the shininess and general coat condition.

Soda crystals is just old fashioned type cleaning stuff - can be used for cleaning loads of stuff. Believe it helps remove grease. Same with Dettol, apparently it removes grease. As does vinegar! I make up my own after-XC-wash-down liquid with white vinegar added as its brilliant for refreshing / removing dirt etc.
