My four month old Lab x Lurcher has the most beautiful shiny coat which he is constantly being complimented on. However, on the past few weeks he has become exceptionally itchy and now he has dandruff!

He's on James Wellbeloved kibble (hypoallergenic food) three times a day and is a healthy, happy puppy with plenty of energy and bright eyes. He does not have fleas and has been wormed. There are no bald patches and it seems to be all over (the back leg goes if you scratch him too hard anywhere).

He's at his most itchy in the morning and wakes me up scratching. I've washed all of the bedding on a hot wash with no detergent with only an initial improvement.

I even bathed him yesterday in anti itching shampoo but his dandruff almost seems worse today!

Ideas appreciated... Could it be a food allergy even being on hypoallergenic food or is that not possible?

Could just be moulting, but dandruff can be a sign of dry skin. Kibble is obviously very dry and they might not drink enough for it. But also yes, they can still have allergies to it...

I would not bath him again you are only removing the oils in the skin. I would be more inclined to give him a little rub with baby oil or similar.

Could be an allergy, a hypoallergenic diet isn't free from allergens. Dogs can be allergic to various types of meat, rice, potato, storage mites, grass, pollens etc the list goes on.

With the change in cold weather recently have you had the heating on/off a lot? That and bathing can dry out skin a lot. The dandruff probably looks worse after his bath is because you have lifted up a lot of the dead skin.

I would try a skin supplement like yumega and not bath him for a while as this can remove his skins natural oils.

Yes of course it could, anyone can be allergic to anything, even water. Not that I am suggesting your dog is allergic to water! Do you know what the ingredients are?

This is what he has:

I was advised against puppy specific food as he was struggling with his stomach and his movement are 100% improved. He has the kibble in water as well as access to a water bowl, so gets plenty of water.

Thanks all. He is not regularly bathed, but I thought I should possibly try the anti-itching shampoo to see if it would help. He is a very clean dog.... in fact, a bit of a princess - he hates rain and mud!!

Yes the heating has been on and off I guess, and this did used to affect my last Labrador but I didn't consider that. There is also a spaniel in the household and he is unaffected.

I'll give him an egg and some oil and will see if things improve. I guess if not and it could be a food allergy it's a case of process of elimination? Or is this something my vets can test for?
