My 21yr welsh C has started to lose hair on her face and in patches along her spine. This happened a couple of years ago about the same time - vet not sure why, gave her a couple of shots and gradually the hair just grew back.

The skin is not irritated or sore, she doesn't seem to be itchy or in any way bothered by it. She is purely a field companion so not tack related. No need to rug her - she has a coat like a bear all winter and is stabled at night.

No sign of lice or other unwanted pests.

Vet coming out to see her but has mentioned it might be seasonal alopecia.

Anyone else come across this?
 
yeah something similar on one of the ponies i know, it has lost small patches of fur in random places no correlation. It doesnt wear a rug and they're not near any tack. They dont seem to bother him so are left for now but if you find anything out please let me know :D
 
hi, mine has patches also he gets them at the change of seasons... had scrapes etc nothing. My vet has taken photos of them when he is over/passing and documents them with a view to sending them to Liverpool, he wonders if it is some sort of auto-immune problem.
 
OK, heres the update.

Vet came out, took blood sample to rule out liver problems, all ok there thankfully but she has got an unexplained high white blood cell coat.

We've sprayed her with deosect to rule out any unwanted crawlies. Wormed thoroughly just in case. On 2 week antibiotic course and got to bath her with prescription scrub as well.

Poor little mare isn't going to know whats hit her!
 
This does seem to be common in older horses during the change of coat. My old mare has balding patches on her thigh and neck at the moment, and a couple of years ago got it on her face. No creepy crawlies or anything present and coat is fine again when summer coat is fully through, so I don't worry too much about it!
