Seasons while pregnant (also in breeding)

Long story short, 18 yr old ex brood mare came into a strong season on day two of being here, went from being skinny (rescue) to being fat, was on Stroppy Mare with our gelding, both were put on a diet, in through the day, no hard feed, just a slice of hay each.
Gelding has lost his weight, mare getting fatter round tummy, do mares have phantom pregnancies or could she have been covered before coming here (March) and had a season despite been covered.
I have no way of checking with her previous owner and I know nothing about pregnancy in horses

Shameless bump, my OH, who first mentioned pregnancy has got me worried

We had a mare once who came into season regularly despite being in foal. She foaled a lovely colt perfectly normally and was a wonderful mother.

If she were mine and I was as concerned as you are I would have her tested to check. Cost a little but at least you would know what to expect.
