Hiya,

This is going to sound like such a silly and basic question, but I am wondering how often mares go in season and how do you know when its happening (besides the obvious/gross squirting)? Since I was a little kid I have only ever had geldings, so I never needed to ask before now.

Now that I have a mare, I wanna be prepared for this stuff. Thanks!

Usually every 3-4 weeks over spring/summer/autumn. Most have less frequent seasons over the winter, some stop altogether when it gets cold, and some annoying mares just keep on going regardless of the winter frost, snow and sub-zero temperatures!!!

Different mares show differently when in season, some are really wet and squirty, some become more lovey, some become moody, some are a mix of all three - you never know until you've seen your mares seasons how they will react!!

I have 2 mares; one comes into season about every 3 weeks & is a bit of a slapper but is fine to ride & handle.
The other one I've had for 26 years & I've never noticed her coming into season in all that time. I don't know if she doesn't even come into season or she's subtle about it.
