Sec D Mare - Itchy legs!

My Sec D mare has very, very itchy back legs - from above the hocks to fetlocks, she's being kept in at the moment due to an injury and is bedded on barley straw. She'll follow me around the stable and pester me to scratch her or even rub on the wheelbarrow.

Any ideas what is the cause? mites?

Yeah sounds like feather mites - which straw can often carry.
Change the bedding to sawdust, and hibiscrub her legs everyday, making sure you get under all the hair.
Also, get hold of some pig oil and sulpher and scrub the legs with that once weekly.
