Had my Sec D 6 months, he had just been back when I bought him, I had the back lady out and she said treat him as a 3 year old as he has no muscle (he was 5).....anyway saddle fitter out in Jan and we started work in Jan. Had him in Wintec VSD with medium gullet....he has changed shape ALOT over the past two months, he started showing signs of discomfort when I put him into trot so I gave him a week off and ordered a Wintec gullet kit, measured him and he was on the wide setting, almost Xwide!! so he has been very tolerant being ridden in the medium. Just want to add-did have saddle fitter check saddle end of March too.

Rode him twice on the wide setting and he was fine, third time showing signs of discomfort so got off him and made appointment with back lady.

She has been out today and sorted him BUT she said now the saddle has been made wider at the front it has made it too wide at the back, it also is a banana shape and his back is flatter now so it rises up at the back to.....advised new saddle needed SO can anyone recommend something sensibly priced (as he may well change again) 16.5, wide front but not back and cut back from the shoulders????

My mare is also a baby (she is 3!). When i had the saddler out she said the saddle i had (whch was 17" medium leather GP) was an okay fit but too narrow along the gullet and as she is a TB she is still quite gangly but doesn't seem to stop growing up. The saddler said when her ribs 'popped' with improved muscle once she starts ridden work she would go from a medium to a medium wide and probably fluctuate over the first year until she is fully developed.

So, seems i had the same problem as you are facing. The saddler tried desperately to sell me a new Thorowgood or new Kent and Masters saddle as she said they have the drop panel for support and the changeable gullet. But although not the most expensive i couldn't afford a new one but was told there was no second hand market for them as they were so interchangeable poeple never get ride of them so i also was a bit stumped as to what to do.

Long story short... i found a second hand T6 (leather look) on Ebay and paid £230 for it with stirrups and girth. Its like new and should have been about £450 new. Will cost me £20 for each new gullet she needs and then can interchange as and when her shape changes. Seems a nice saddle so far and fits her nicely.

:) :) :)

Thanks for the replies.

I cant get a T4 as they start at 17", he just about fits a 16.5" although fitter said I could do with a 17" :p
