Hi
I have a body protector that currently fits me, but I am getting quite self-conscious about it because it's pink. I got it a few years ago, when I wasn't so bothered about the colour. I know it's trivial, but when it gets hotter I will be in a t shirt, not covering up the pink. I would like a body protector of a different colour, but I know they are a lot of money- though safety is definitely worth money, I was wondering if second hand body protectors are ok. Of course, I know helmets aren't ok second hand, just wondered if body protectors are! Also, does anyone know if there are safety standards I should watch out for, or other extra information I may need if body protectors are ok second hand?
Thank you :)

Personally I wouldn't touch a second hand body protector. Most Body protectors tend to be made from a PVC nitrile foam which is not designed for multiple impacts. In fact on the BETA (British Equestrian Trade Association) website it reccommends body protectors should be replaced after an impact (same as you would a hat). Has your current body protector ever suffered an impact or have you fallen off in it? If the answer is yes, your body protector wouldn't be suitable for resale. The second question to ask yourself is how old your current body protector? In a similar way to hats the foam of the body protector degrades and becomes brittle. BETA reccommend you update your body protector at least every 3-5 years.

With regards to what to look for in a BP, the first thing to look for is the safety standard. Personally I would suggest one with a purple BETA level 3 2009 label. This would be suitable for all riding club/pony club/BE activities. Next I would make sure it is professionally fitted. Most tack shops have trained staff who can ensure the one you buy fits properly. Finally make sure it is comfortable, if it is uncomfortable you won't want to wear it!

Hope that helps. I'm a bit of a safety geek!

My body protector is quite old! Thank you very much for all that information!
I will look into other options, thanks all :)
