As my filly has out grown even the largest rugs I own, I am going to have to sell and buy replacements this autumn. I've got a pile of rugs, now too small. About 15 of them

I have a couple of questions:

Many of the turnout rugs are Rambo's or Fal (but all the rugs are quality ones) and cost a fortune to buy new. All have been used and are in need of a clean so I've booked everything to be collected next week for a wash (and reproofed and/or repaired, if necessary). But, is this worth having done before I sell? It's going to cost between £200 - £300 to have them all cleaned and sorted. There are alot of them! Will I really make £20 extra on each rug, just for selling it clean?

Also, aside from eBaying them, is there anywhere else I could advertise them? I am considering using the local Freeads and tack shops, but are their any other websites where second hand items can be advertised? I am thinking that selling them locally will be better than having to post them!

If i was buying a second hand rug i probably would pay a bit more if it was clean etc. makes it look better condition

But if i was buying off a friend i wouldn't mind if they were not clean so you could save money there if you knew anybody who would want them?

Sorry probably not much help!

Definately worth getting them cleaned and repaired before selling them.

But why not spread the cost, and do say 3 a month? I've sold a lot of second hand rugs on Ebay (Rambo's and Fal like you), and they've always made excellent money.

But I'd never sell more than 3 at once, because it soon becomes a major pain the in backside if you have too much being sold at once.

I bought 5 2nd hand rugs this year, they have got no tears ect but were slightly dirty, doesn't bother me, their only gonna get caked in mud anyway

I'd rather buy a 2nd hand rug, a lot cheaper! My lot are good at trashing them!

i only buy 2nd hand rugs!
but - i would not buy a dirty one unless it was about £20 cheaper than i thought it should be -as i wouldn't put it on my horse before it was cleaned.... just in case of cooties!!

out of interest, Spyda, what size are they?
i've got a few to sell and have sold them in the past on there, but tbh i don't think it makes more than £5 worth of difference in the price.
this year i've washed all mine at home myself, huge wheelbarrow full of sudsy water, let them soak for a bit, hang up (great fun, weigh a ton) and hose off thoroughly inside and out, leave to dry. costs a LOT less and at least you can say they're clean...

That seems like quite alot.
I guess if you are talking about a turnout it could cost £20 to wash reproof and repair but the company I use charge £6 for a stable or 6.80 for a turnout.
Before that I used to go down to the local laundrette but at those prices I send them away to be done.

I sold two of Chancer's rugs recently - I stated that there were not cleaned, but that the underside was not greasy or dirty and that the outside had a few mud marks but were not filthy and caked in mud. I also said that they were still water proof - only used for less than a year and that he had never has suffered from any skin conditons or pests - sold them very quickly as is.

I put 2 of mine on ebay that had been washed but the wash hadnt got them sparkiling clean- i stated this in the ad and they went within days as they were on for a reasonable price. Make sure you make back what you spend on the cleaning tho otherwise you will be out of pocket xx

They're mainly 6' and a few 6'3" so the average size. So I should be able to sell them okay.

I too would wash any second hand rug I bought, just to be on the safe side.

I think the company I'm using charges about £9 to clean and reproof a t/o rug and £7 for a stable. Plus £3 - 5 for a neck cover. Most of mine are combos or have an extra neck cover. Not sure about repairs on top, but going by what it cost to have my Fal Goliath cleaned, reproofed and repaired last year (just a new zip on the neck cover) of £42, I expect it'll be expensive!
