Im about to purchase a fairly cheap second hand saddle - there are two Im interested in a synthetic and a leather. What do I need to check and ask before I part with my money? There are no obvious lesions to either...

Thanks in advance :)

Why buy a cheap saddle, your horse needs one that fits him and you might best look for an English saddle, by a good maker. I bought a nice jeffries event saddle from 1984, checked and re flocked, it cost £208 delivered.

Are you confident that it'll fit your horse properly? A cheap saddle can end up being a really expensive one if your horse ends up with issues as a result of it not being right.

I have a saddler who will be checking it when Ive bought it, Im buying a cheap one because it is for him to be backed in and to last a few months then I shall be buying him a nice shiny one.
Im not buying a proper cheap saddle - its costing me £175 and then Im prepared to pay for reflocking etc .. I just want to know if theres anything I need to be looking at when I get it?

Also it is a well known make :)

Im buying a cheap saddle also because I do not want a synthetic saddle long term - I cannot afford £800 for the bates changeable gullet saddle so am going for a cheap one for starters then a nicer one when I will get a bit more use out of it.

Got you.

Well, I guess asking if it's been dropped, stood on - that sort of thing, although depends on seller being honest! I know that damaged trees can't always be felt as such.

sigh, why do you need to have a new shiny saddle if the first one fits him, I am lost.
The first ridden experience is the most important.

because he is young and will grow! and also in the event of him throwing himself on the floor etc etc ... better a cheap one than a nice shiny one! If you are not going to read my post and answer the questions I have asked.. I would rather you not reply at all.

showqa - Thanks, hmm I guess your right.. I may just bite the bullet and spend a bit extra on one off the saddler.... I will at least then have a bit more peace of mind :)
