Ive never bought one but found one on ebay i like.

How do the fitting of second hand saddles work? Is it a case of trial and error? buying it and getting the saddler out to say whether its anygood or not?

I'm always suspicious of second hand saddles online. It's a lot of money to spend for something that more than likely will not fit and there are so many rogue traders on ebay, these days! Otherwise, yes, it's the same as buying one anywhere. A saddler will come and check its fit for you and reflock if nec.

Have to say I'd only buy an adjustable Wintec/ Bates/ Collegiate off ebay. The likelyhood of traditional saddles fitting is a real gamble.

Oh bum.. i think i was hoping for some special miracle or something!

Typical.

Arent people worried about spending £200 on a ebay saddle to find it doesnt fit? Or am i just a pennypincher?

I think most people would only consider buying a saddle off ebay if they know the specific make/size they want.

Ahh i see what you mean, i best get the saddler out then.

Theres a lovely fieldhouse one on there but it'll have to wait.

Typical. lol.

I bought a lovely, but rather 'worn in' dressage saddle from ebay. It was a 17.5" albion and that was specifically what I was after as I had tried my friend's on my horses and was happy with it. It's not new and shiny but was, and is, far superior to the newer and shinier saddle I had previously. It was about £250 and a brill buy in my opinion.

It's always a risk, but you can minimise this by sticking to to right brand/size etc.

If you know your horse, and previous saddles well, then it can work. I would only buy Ideal saddles, as I've had several Ideals all in a 17" wide fitting and all have been near on perfect with a little adjustment. I wouldn't buy one on the off chance.

Just bought a second hand Albion off EBAY, jut needed re-flocking (which she stated) which i've had done for £45 and now i have a brill saddle at a real bargain price, i would do it again

I've bought 4 saddles of Ebay, they have all fitted but I knew what size I needed. I was also looking for a specialist jumping saddle which you just don't see in normal tack shops second hand.

I brought my pessoa of ebay, but i knew what size i needed. The seller was fab (thank goodness as i spent £600 in total) and even sent me a nice new saddlecloth and the girth & leathers to go with it & they were mentioned on the listing. As it happened the leather were too long for me & the girth too long for my horse so sold them on to make a little bit back.

Also brought my single flap stubben dressage of ebay another fab buy would never have been able to buy it new or second hand in saddlery fits like a glove

I personally would only buy an adjustable saddle from ebay, eg wow or saddle company as every horse is different and feel it's too risky!!

If you have a good saddler who deals in second hand saddles then it's worth a try, as you could always offer to sell it on to them or part ex it for another one if it doesn't fit.

I just bought a saddle off ebay but it a wintec dressage and I tried one on my horse as my mother has one for hers, and so I knew that it would suit him. I would not have a clue otherwise as there seems to be a world of difference between one "medium" fit saddle and another etc.

One of our local tack shops has secondhand saddles, and you can leave the cost of the saddle as a deposit and take it home for a week to try. If you want to keep it or you damage it she cashes the cheque. Thats a good system!
