advice seeked: when have you found is the best time to advertise foals, if wishing to sell at weaning? said foal is due in may do i advertise when she/he is 6weeks old or do i wait untill closer to weaning??
I advertise on my own website after a few days of the birth and then keep them updated. Ocassionally I advertise on websites, but generally all ours our sold via our website and by word of mouth now. We have several people waiting to see what foals we have born for 2008. We have sold "in-utero" before as well.
NO...dont wait until weaning time, just in case you miss the boat and end up with youngsters to keep over the winter. Remember people like to buy youngsters during the summer months, as in the winter they are not looking to increase their numbers...
so what protocol have you gone through regarding payment?? should i ask for a deposit then if so what sort or percentage of price and what would happen of something happened to the foal prior to weaning??
Previously we took a few £100. Last year we took half the price up front and the rest 10 days before weaning, with the deposit refundable if anything major happened to the foal. When a weaning date is agreed the new owners are then responsible for any livery or vet fees after the date if the foal or youngster is still with us for any reason.
If you are taking cheques please please note that people can cancel cheques within 10 days, even if the money is in your account!! We know from experience
!! Unless I know the people I now ask that all transactions are done via bank transfer.
This year I am contemplating taking the full price up front and asking the purchaser to insure the foal as the new owners. This way both parties are covered should anything happen, rather than ourselves being the losers.
When we have purchased from abroad in the past we have had to pay up front and have been liable for anything that has happened after that point.
